Thank you, first of all, for spending your time to
read this. This is not meant to be taken lightly.
This is about my disappointment toward KPM which
seems to me, has failed to achieve their objective
in making Program Pelajar Cemerlang(PPC) a success.
We have all known that PPC is brought out to life
by those who have a vision that Malaysia should
have better teachers, in order to improve the
current state of our education system. To put what
one of Bahagian Pendidikan Guru(BPG) officers
said, They will replace us in the future. PPC
was endorsed and approved by our former Prime
Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir since he thought this
was, and still is, a good idea to change our old
way of teaching by exposing future teachers to the
new ways. Malaysia needs a lot of changes and
improvements in our current education system. By
sending future teachers to overseas, just like
what we did about 50 years ago, they are exposed
to the Western ways of educating students. Western
does not mean bad, as long as we take what is
good. Knowledge gained by these future teachers
are invaluable, but wisdom must also come with
that too. Knowledge can put nations on the world
map like, for example, making nuclear bombs like
what the US, UK, China and India do, but wisdom
puts us back in pieces. If not, we are all be
vaporized from the earth right now, if they start
to launch those weapons to all over the world.
Similar to what Ive intended to say, the 1st
batch of PPC students are the pioneer ones. They
are the benchmark, the group which we all can
measure the success if the program is effective.
Sadly, this is not what Ive seen so far. Those
future teachers spent two years(some one and a
half years) doing A level before going to New
Zealand, Australia, and United Kingdom. As far as
time immemorial, we humans are not perfect.
Therefore, what I want to highlight is, there are
3 PPC students who didnt meet KPMs minimum pass
line. I didnt say there have failed in their
studies since some of us got offers to pursue the
same course they are put, albeit they have to
extend a year more to do a foundation course in
order to strengthened their basics.
The sad news to these students is, KPM decided not
to send us to overseas, on the ground they dont
want to do that so this will become an example to
others. What I want to say is, they dont give a
chance to these students.
I am speaking on behalf of myself, who is very
disappointed to see KPM way of handling these
unfortunate students. We had worked hard for two
years just to see our ambition fade away, even we
had offers to further our studies in universities.
KPM cited a few reasons, mainly they have to
follow agreements and it is public money when we
were put to study in Intec and KYUEM. We are
threatened to pay back RM60,000+ if we break our
agreement. Then there are more. They have made an
offer to us, to study at local maktab by putting
us in PISMP program. PISMP program is a totally
different program from PPC. PISMP program is
designed to produce graduate teachers. The
students consist of current teachers who already
have a diploma degree. In line with KPMs
intention to make all teachers have at least a
degree, they put these teachers into PISMP program.
To add salt to the wound, the 3 of us will be
teaching Science and Mathematics at PRIMARY
school. This is way out of PPC focus of producing
Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics
teachers for SECONDARY school. This is not fair to
us since we will not be able to join our PPC
future colleagues anymore.
I think this is not fair to 3 of us and certainly
not fair to those diploma teachers who are the
main target of this PISMP program since we will be
taking their deserved seats in the maktab. For
your information, there are more than 80,000
applicants for only 2,000 seats, which means there
is 40:1 ratio. Incredible, isnt it? And the 3 of
us will be GUARANTEED to get the 3 seats.
Why dont KPM give 3 of us a chance to study at
the universities they had been offered? Is is more
about money problem? No, it is not because you have
given millions of ringgit to make the PPC program
a success. Is it because KPM doesnt want to do
additional job in putting us at the universities?
Maybe. Why cant they change a bit in the agreement
to accommodate these unfortunate students who
holds an offer? For example, KPM can extend our
contract to work with them from the current 8
years to 10 years, or maybe they can make us pay
for the additional one year for doing foundation
course, after we come back.
The 3 of us are all inspired to be excellent
teachers. Our love in teaching is what drives us
to excel in our studies but because of some
problems, we didnt achieve your minimum
requirement. We dont study for 2 years just to
fail in the end. That is never in our mind to do
that, nor setting an example to other batches,
that it is OK to fail. Never. We have wasted OUR
two and a half years, getting nowhere because we
didnt achieve what KPM wants, even though the
university side says it doesnt mean we have
failed. An admission tutor from Swansea
University, Dr Chris Allton, told me in a phone
conversation, We have students who once got low
results in A level but in the end of the course,
they got 1st class. What does it mean to you? It
means it is possible to get good results if they
are given second chance. What chance has KPM given
to the 3 of us? NONE. You have given no chance in
proving ourselves that we can strive for success.
KPM has made 3 of us wasted two and half years of
our lives, getting nothing in the end because KPM
want us to follow the agreement and by putting us
in some PISMP program. Please dont talk about we,
being ungrateful. We have been robbed more than
two years of our life and an offer, but it is
wasted because some agreement. It is like we are
some kind of joke, easy to be kicked around.
In the end, what matters? Money, rules or our
future generationss education?Investing money in
education is worth more than keeping the money in
the coffin. There are risks but life is about
taking risk, isnt it? It seems that KPM doesnt
want to take risk. It is like you dont dare to
walk anymore, after you have found a needle in the
pavement while you are walking.
What KPM should do is give the chance they deserve.
